The class is finishing up our Book Review Writing Unit. We have been learning to write about our opinions. The children write if they liked a book or not, and then write why they liked or disliked it. Giving reasons to support our opinion has been difficult and something that we will continue to work on throughout the remainder of the school year. You can practice with your child at home. Just pick a topic and have them write about their favorite and why it is their favorite (favorite type of ice cream, color, place, etc.). Or you can write your own book reviews after you finish reading a new story.

We have begun a new reading unit on Summarizing and Fix-Up Monitoring! The children are learning how to find the key ideas and events in both non-fiction and fiction texts. Once we identify the ideas and events, we look for common elements and summarize the text. The children will learn how to use a graphic organizer to show what they know about summarizing books. Our reading strategy, fix-up monitoring, helps us when we come to a word we don't know. We are learning how to use text features, pictures, known letters, and known events to help us read. Have fun summarizing and using fix-up monitoring at home!
Thank you families for coming to conferences these past two weeks! I enjoyed every moment with you. Your children have grown so much this year, and it is because of all your support and time.
We have had a wonderful week of learning. Today we celebrated our 100th day of Kindergarten! It is amazing to think of all our accomplishments in just 100 days. We had special 100 math, reading, writing, and art activities. We even got to see pictures of our 100 year old selves! Tomorrow is our Valentine's Party. The students are excited to exchange Valentine cards with their classmates and end the day with fun activities. We will do other Valentine learning throughout our day. Enjoy your Friday and Monday off! We will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, February 17th. Last night was the first night of winter conferences. I had a wonderful time meeting with families and sharing all that the children have learned this year. I want to thank you for all the work you do with your child at home. By partnering together, your child has made tremendous growth this year. I am excited to see how they continue to grow during the remainder of the year. I look forward to meeting with the rest of the families next Monday, February 9th, and Wednesday, February 11th. Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
