I want to encourage you to keep practicing sight words at home with your child. I'm starting to re-assess their sight words. It is good to bring out the words they have already mastered to make sure they remember them. If your child already can read them, practice writing and spelling them and encourage him or her to use the word in his or her writing. I've listed the sight words in the more tab in this blog. Knowing these words will help your child read at home and at school!

Conferences are coming! A note went home in this week's Wednesday mail. Please follow this link http://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Woodland_Elementary_School
or call (763)315-6400 to schedule a conference time. I look forward to seeing everyone! We are in our third math unit. The unit is titled "Teen Numbers as Tens and Ones." We began by exploring numbers as groups of tens and some ones. We looked at how two partners or addends make a sum when added together. As the unit goes on, we will explore 2- and 3-Dimensional shapes, graphing, and subtraction. Tuesday and Thursday homework sheets should be an easy review of the concepts we have already learned in class. You can also have your child practice writing their numbers (with no reversals). Ask your child all about teen numbers! Our second unit in social studies is titled "A Big Wide World." In it, we are learning about directional words, land, water, changing seasons, community homes, needs, wants, working, and saving. I have listed the unit vocabulary words below as a conversation starter for you and your child.
Now that we are mid-way through our year, it is time to look back at our Hopes and Dreams. In September, each child picked a Hope and Dream for the year. We are taking time each day this week to reflect on our Hopes and Dreams. It is fun to see how much closer we are to attaining these. We will look at what else we need to do to accomplish them, as well as extend and add to them. Think back on your Hopes and Dreams for your child. Have a discussion with your child about them and how to use the rest of the school year to accomplish them.
We began unit 4 in reading this week. Our comprehension focus is analyzing story elements and our meta-cognitive strategy is summarizing and synthesizing. The students are learning songs to help them identify the different story elements. They are characters, setting, problem, and solution. We are discussing how we analyze and think about these different elements. As we are reading, we explain our thinking in order to synthesize the information in the book. Our thinking changes as we find out new information. We identify these changes. At the end of the story, we put the story in our own words to practice summarizing. These are things you can practice at home, too. Have your child explain how their thinking changes as the story progresses. Children should practice identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution. At the end of the book, practice summarizing the story. Kindergarten Homework
Dear Kindergarten Families, It’s time to add to our Kindergarten homework! This sheet is to inform you about our homework and weekly expectations. We are working with your children to help them become responsible for their own work, but as kindergarteners, they will still need your help (and signatures!) from time to time as they grow and become more self-sufficient. Mondays: Word Bird Word Homework (the strip of words in the envelope) DUE FRIDAY-1 date & initial per week required Tuesdays: Math Homework (on blue paper) DUE WEDNESDAY Wednesdays: Reading Comprehension Homework (read the story with your child and answer questions) DUE THURSDAY—signature required Thursdays: Math Homework (on blue paper) DUE FRIDAY Other Important Information: Reading Calendars are due at the end of each month-the calendar must be signed, and the child must read for at least 300 minutes to be eligible for the reward. Thank you all so much for your help and support! The Kindergarten Teachers I'm so glad that everyone is back at school! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break filled with lots of fun with family and friends!
Now that we are officially into our Winter season, here are a few reminders:
The students have had a great first two days back! Let's stay warm and keep learning! |
Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
