The students are learning about Author's Purpose. We begin by asking, "Why did the author write this?" The answer is as easy as PIE! Three reasons why an author writes are to Persuade, Inform, and Entertain. We are reading examples of each type of writing, as well as finding examples in our book bags, Media Center, and world. What types of author's purpose can you find at home?

We have reviewed pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and one dollar bills. This is an important skill for our students to know. The reporting standard is "knows the value of a group of coins." As our year is ending, continue to practice counting a group of dollars and coins with your child. You may also want to practice counting by 25's, 10's, and 5's. We will be assessing this skill in May. Happy counting! The 2nd Grade Musical is coming! Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 9th at 6:30 p.m. The students will have a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 8th at 10:15 a.m. and a school performance on the 9th at 2:30 p.m. You are welcome to come to any show. More news about when your child needs to be at school the night of the 9th is coming. We are looking forward to performing!
We are learning about contractions! The students are using an apostrophe to replace a letter or letters when combining two words. Try finding and making contractions at home!
We have just wrapped up our second mini-unit on shapes in math. The students learned about congruent and similar shapes. Then, we focused on slides, flips, and turns. Next, we looked at sorting shapes. Finally, we learned about area and square units.
This follows our unit on creating diagonals and midpoints on shapes. The students worked on describing the new shapes that were created when you add a diagonal or connect two midpoints. Continue to discuss these concepts with your child. Our units were short, but these are important geometry concepts that will continue to come up in your child's education. Sunday May 19, 1:10 pm the Twins play the Boston Red Sox. If you want to order tickets, the deadline is Thursday, April 11. See the link below for information.
The deadline for staff and students Twins Ticket orders is April 11. http://schools.district279.org/WD/images/stories/WD/doc/13_twins_night.pdf This week we have been learning about the spinning motion. We made and experimented with tops, zoomers, and twirlers! The students are enjoying the different ways items can spin. We have learned about forces (push & pull). Different spinners need different forces to make them spin. What can you find at home that spins?

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
