Blending is a strategy we use to sound out unknown words. The students say each letter sound and slowly blend the word together. This strategy works for most words. We start with simple 3-letter words and move to long-vowel words as our reading improves.
Our sight words (word bird words) are words that CANNOT be sounded out. These are words that we just must memorize. They are frequently used words that we just must know.
Over the next few weeks, we are going to focus on both blending and sight words. This is something you can focus on at home, as well. Ask your child about blends and sight words we focused on in school. Challenge them to use blends and sight words in a sentence. Get creative! We want to have accurate readers!
