The scholars have been learning about Read to Someone. We started by making our I chart. We discussed what Independence means. Then, we came up with a list of what Read to Someone looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Next, we started practicing Read to Someone. We are slowly adding minutes to build our stamina. The class is still learning the components of Read to Someone. There are different ways to Read to Someone. Scholars need to sit EEKK (ask your child what this means). We Check for Understanding after reading each page. We will continue to learn about Read to Someone and build our stamina over the next few weeks. Ask your child how it is going!

Our Scholars have begun Work on Writing. We have been learning about our writing procedures during Writer's Workshop. First, we made a list of how to be a good listener. Then, we practiced telling stories. Next, we made our I Chart for what Work on Writing looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Now we are finally putting our procedures together and writing!
The scholars are already enjoying music class this year! Our music teachers, Mrs. Bordonaro and Mrs. Burk, wanted me to share our 2nd Grade Musical dates. It isn't until May, but please mark your calendars now.
Dress Rehearsal--May 7 at 2:30 p.m. Performance--May 8 at 2:30 & 6:30 p.m. We have begun Read to Self! Just like athletes, we are building up our reading stamina each day so we can become independent readers. We have made it over half-way to our 20 minute goal! Ask your child about what it means to be an independent reader. Have your child show you how to pick a good fit book and good reading place. We love Reading to Self! We follow a weekly schedule for homework. There will be homework every night. We are still working on routines, so homework will be introduced within the next few weeks. I go over everything with the students at school, so they should know what to do. We also write in our planners every day. Please review the planner and sign it daily. There will be information for you in the planner. If we do need to change something, it will be in the planner.
Here is our schedule: Monday: High Frequency Words--cut the words apart, practice reading & writing--sign once a week and return envelope on Friday Tuesday: Fluency--read the passage several times--sign and return empty envelope on Wednesday Wednesday: Math--should take 10-15 minutes--will be a review--return next day Thursday: Math--should take 10-15 minutes--will be a review--return next day Friday: Reading--read story from our reading anthology--sign sheet and return both on Monday The students also should be reading about 15 minutes every day (400 minutes for the month). Record the time on their reading calendar. Sign and return on the first of the month. All your work at home helps us learn at school! The students had their fluency assessment today. They did an amazing job with their reading. We will now use that data to help us focus on what each child needs in reading. Today was also our first day of fluency homework. Have your child read the passage several times to improve their fluency. In a few weeks, we will send home three passages. You will let me know which passage is most appropriate so you can work on fluency at home. Then we will send home passages that work best for your child!
Happy Reading! Here is what our day will look like this year!

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
