We are making observations and inferences!
We have begun our math unit on 2-digit subtraction. Starting tomorrow, we will look at two different methods for solving subtraction problems. The students will be practicing these methods at school and at home. We want to move away from drawings and learn how to subtract equations. Students need to understand place value. We will continue to explore the relationship between ones, tens, and hundreds. Below are the steps for each method. Look for parent letters with examples.
Next week, we begin learning about character response. We have been focusing on character traits, and now will move to how characters respond to the events in the story. When reading with your child at home, ask questions about the characters. What did the character do? What happened in the story to make the character respond that way? What traits does the character have? How did a different character respond to the same event? Why did they respond differently/same? These and other questions will help develop reading comprehension.
This Friday, February 22nd, is our field trip to the Science Museum of Minnesota! We are going to see real dinosaur fossils, make observations and inferences, and explore all the exhibits. Be sure to send a disposable lunch for your child unless you have already ordered one (on the permission slip). We will leave first thing in the morning, eat lunch at the museum, and return to Woodland at 2:30. We are excited!
We have started using Moby Math. This program individualizes learning and is a great way you can do math at home. Any device with internet access will work. Click on the link below and your child will put in his or her username and password and have a lesson designed just for them. We will be doing Moby Math at school, too. The goal is to use Moby Math 3 times a week for 20 minutes at home. Enjoy!
http://www.runmoby.com/ We are learning to identify Character Traits. The students are reading books, picking a character, identifying a trait that character has, and then writing what that character would say. We are using both fiction and non-fiction (biographies) books in learning about traits. The class is making a list of different traits. You could have a list at home and then discuss the characters in the story you are reading. This week we will pick two characters and write a dialogue between them!
We have begun our science unit on Observations & Inferences! The students are learning how to make observations using their five senses. Then, we make an inference (or good guess) using our observations. To help us learn, we are studying dinosaurs and fossils! We have been paleontologists finding fossils in chocolate chip cookies, making our own fossils, and reading about a real-life fossil hunter. We will even be going to the Science Museum to see real dinosaur fossils!
Our math unit is all about Graphs and comparison problems. The students reviewed picture and bar graphs. We created a survey question, collected data, put our data into a table, and then turned the table into a graph. Next, we learn about circle graphs. Students will practice 2-digit addition in using graphs. Keep practicing comparison story problems at home. Two vocabulary words we use often are "more" and "fewer." We will assess our unit early next week! :)

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
