See you next year!
One more day before Winter Break! I hope everyone has a wonderful time! Get some rest, read some books (maybe to a relative), do some writing or journaling, and play! You all have worked hard over the past four months. Now take this time to relax and refresh. I wish you all a Merry Break and a Happy New Year!
See you next year!

The last week before Winter Break has arrived! The students are excited about some time off! We are still working hard, learning about Places in Social Studies, writing directions to make the cutest reindeer in the world, learning strategies to add 2-digit numbers, and creating a special surprise for their families.
As this year ends and a new one begins, I like to reflect on all we have learned since September. Yes, there have been some failures, but the lessons each child has learned, the joy that comes from mastering a concept, and that light in your child's eye makes my job a pleasure. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful break. Take some time to laugh and enjoy life. I look forward to picking right back up on January 2nd! The snow has fallen. The weather is chilly. Yes, it is that time of year. It is time for our Second Grade Winter Party!
We will be celebrating on Friday, December at 3:00 p.m. Your child will experience fun games, activities, a craft, and snack. It is also Woodland's Over the Top Ugly Sweater Day! Your child may wear his or her favorite ugly sweater to celebrate. If you do not own any ugly sweaters, feel free to dress in Woodland Wear or our school colors (blue & green). We are still in need of parent volunteers for our party. If you are willing and able, please email me at [email protected]. We will be sending volunteer information home on Friday, December 14. It's time to celebrate winter! Strategies to Help Your Child Write a Summary *We have taught these 3 strategies/formats to our students. The children use the strategy that works best for them and/or their book or topic, then use their work as a sort of ‘prewriting’ to help them write a complete summary. (Examples are provided using the story, “Little Red Riding Hood”) Somebody Wanted But So Then (SWBST) Write Somebody Wanted But So Then (or SWBST) vertically down the left side of a piece of paper. Write the answer to each word/question to help organize ideas for a summary. Example: Somebody: Little Red Riding Hood Wanted: to deliver treats to her sick grandmother But: the wolf found out about Red’s trip, and got to Grandma’s house first So: the wolf hid Grandma in the closet and pretended to be Red’s grandmother Then: the woodsman came just in time to keep Red and her grandmother from being eaten by the wolf Who/What/Where/When/Why/How This one is pretty self-explanatory. Write an answer to each of the question words. Who: Red Riding Hood What: Red was sent to deliver treats to her sick grandmother Where: She took a different route, and went through the forest When: The wolf met Red in the forest, and beat her to her grandmother’s house Why: The wolf wanted to eat Red and her grandmother How: The wolf tried to trick Red into thinking he was her grandmother, but just as she discovered the trick, the woodsman came in and saved her Beginning, Middle, End (BME) Write one or two sentences about the most important details for the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Today, the students took another Word Study Assessment. I will look at each child's test to see what word patterns they understand and which ones they need to continue to learn. I will be making new Word Study groups based on the assessments and children's understanding of how words are formed. On Friday, December 14, I will be sending home words for their new groups. Some children will receive a different color word sheet. Some students may receive the same color word sheet. The transition from spelling to Word Study has had some bumps along the way, but the students know the routines and are learning how words are developed. They are working hard!

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
