Our final week of 2nd Grade is upon us. The students have had many successes this past year. They have learned and grown. We will look back over our school year during our final week. The children will reflect on their Hopes & Dreams they created the first week of school. We will look at your Hopes & Dreams for your child, too. It will be a week of celebration, as well as a week to create new goals as we move forward.

Hello Woodland Families!
We will be hosting our annual “BUY ONE GET ONE FREE” book fair and FREE ice cream social on Thursday, May 29th from 4:30-7:00. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading and enjoy a yummy ice cream treat! Look for a Scholastic flyer in this week’s Wednesday mail. We hope to see you there! Our math unit has been reviewing 3-digit addition and subtraction. This is something that the students need to keep practicing. We are also reviewing money amounts. Both of these can be practiced at home on a daily basis, without taking much time. Grab a handful of coins and have your child count them. Have your child write and solve a story problem using 3-digit addition or subtraction. Keep reviewing adding and subtracting numbers 0-9. Students should know their addition and subtraction facts. It is important for children to master these skills as they go off to 3rd Grade!
We are learning about different fiction genres. The students are reading and identifying the characteristics of folktales, poetry, and fables. We are comparing and contrasting the genres, too. There are many types of fiction genres. The children are enjoying hearing, reading, and writing these genres.
This week, Mrs. Cobb visited our room to discuss online safety. We watched the first 8 minutes of the attached video. I attached the link so the children could watch the rest of the video at home. It contains helpful information and other online safety tips. The children are bringing home a signed pledge sheet that states they promise to be safe when using the internet! http://www.netsmartz.org/NetSmartzKids/RBS WANTED: “SUPER KIDS” FUN DAY 2014 VOLUNTEERS

We have 21 more days of 2nd Grade. With many exciting events (Musical, Field Trip, etc.) and the arrival of spring it is often difficult to remain focused on school. The children still have things to learn this year. I'm asking you to help in keeping the kiddos focused on finishing their year on a high note. Keep encouraging your child to do their best work, listen to others, and be respectful. I know we can finish strong!
The students are learning about the reasons authors write. We are using the phrase, "It's as easy as pie!" The letters in the word pie tell us three of the most common purposes authors write.
As you are reading with your child at home, have a conversation about why the author wrote the text. Find examples of each purpose in your daily activities and keep a list. Be the author, choose a purpose and write something new. Have fun exploring and learning about author's purpose! |
Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
