I want to wish all the children and families a safe and fun Winter Break! I hope everyone has some fun during their time off from school. Use this time to refresh and come back ready to work and learn! We have more fun and learning in the new year. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2014!

We have begun analyzing story characters. First, pick a character from the story. Then, pick a trait that character has. Finally, find evidence from the book that shows the trait. This is new learning for some children. It takes lots of practice. We will be creating a list of character traits to use in the classroom. Children could create their own list at home to use during their daily reading time. Analyzing characters helps readers connect to the characters and story. Happy analyzing! A new reading comprehension strategy we have been learning about is Asking Questions Throughout the Reading Process. The questions begin with: *who *what *when *where *why *how Students are learning how to ask questions about the story that begin with these words. We write our questions down and stick them to the question word. We also are working on answering the questions. Sometimes we can find the answers to our questions in the text. Other questions may not have a right or wrong answer. We have to use the information from the text to support our answer. This is an easy strategy to use at home. It can be used with any genre, anywhere. Happy Questioning! We are beginning to learn about 2-digit addition in math! Our unit began with making hundred boxes, ten sticks, and circles to make a math drawing representing 2- and 3-digit numbers. This was a review from 1st grade. The students also learned about decade numbers, rounding, odd and even numbers, and estimation. Every concept has a common theme: place value. The students should be able to identify the ones, tens, and hundreds place in a number.
Now we are ready to begin 2-digit addition. Today, we invented our own strategies for solving story problems with 2-digit addition. Most students chose to make a picture using hundred boxes, ten sticks, and circles. A few students chose the counting-on strategy. They wrote the first number, drew ten sticks and circles, and counted-on to find the total. We will learn several methods for solving 2-digit addition equations. These may be different from how you learned to add. The language is also different. Look for family letters. They will explain each method. Practice math talk when solving 2-digit addition with your child. We practice explaining our thinking every day at school, so they should be able to do the same at home. I will post pictures of 2-digit addition methods as we learn them. The children worked hard to learn about place value and are excited to begin learning different methods for solving 2-digit addition! The students are continuing to learn about the Main Idea in reading. This is a great comprehension skill in both Informational (Non-Fiction) and Fictional texts. We have introduced the graphic organizer seen in the picture to help us identify the Main Idea in a passage. This week, we identified the Main Idea in our weekly reading story and health lessons. We will be working on Main Idea throughout the school year. This would be great to do at home with any type of reading. Dear Family,
This week you will be seeing my report card. My report card will be my teacher’s attempt to describe my actions and accomplishments at school during the past weeks. As you read the card, please remember that my teacher is describing someone near and dear to you, so please don’t get uptight if you see a blemish. I hope you will accept me as I am. Remember that all children do not learn to walk and talk at the same age, nor do they learn math or reading at the same rate. Please do not compare me to my brothers, sisters, or friends, because my talents and weaknesses are unique to this world. Be realistic in setting my goals. I need to be challenged, but not to be pushed beyond my ability. Like you, I will make mistakes and I will learn from them. I need to taste success and I need time to smell the flowers while I am still a child. Please understand that my report card is a picture of me at school. It is a whole different world from the one at home. Can you imagine having 28 children my age at the dinner table tonight, or 200 children in your backyard playing? Don’t be surprised to find that I respond in a different manner at school. My teacher knows me as I am at school. You know me as I am at home. The real me may be somewhere in between. When these two images are blended with sufficient understanding, acceptance, and love, I hope you will see a unique individual who can make you proud and bring you much happiness. Love, Your Child |
Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
