Now we are ready to begin 2-digit addition. Today, we invented our own strategies for solving story problems with 2-digit addition. Most students chose to make a picture using hundred boxes, ten sticks, and circles. A few students chose the counting-on strategy. They wrote the first number, drew ten sticks and circles, and counted-on to find the total.
We will learn several methods for solving 2-digit addition equations. These may be different from how you learned to add. The language is also different. Look for family letters. They will explain each method. Practice math talk when solving 2-digit addition with your child. We practice explaining our thinking every day at school, so they should be able to do the same at home.
I will post pictures of 2-digit addition methods as we learn them. The children worked hard to learn about place value and are excited to begin learning different methods for solving 2-digit addition!
