The students are working on the beginning, middle, and end of a story. We read a story, discuss the characters, setting, problem, events, and solution. We are now practicing writing and telling the story in order. This is a great way to begin summarizing a story. It is the first step in reading comprehension. We use this chart daily to help us understand our reading and make us better writers. Use this at home to reinforce your child's comprehension of the story events. Students can also practicing writing the beginning, middle, and end of a story you are reading at home. When your child is writing, make sure they include the characters and setting in the beginning of their story, the problem in the middle of the story, and the solution at the end of their story. Happy Beginning, Middle, and End!

Yes, conferences are finally here! Starting next week, will meet with each other to share how your child is doing. On Monday, a letter was sent home with your child's reading and math assessment scores. This information is for you to look over and think about before we meet. Please bring any questions and concerns with you to your conference. Together we can work on a plan and set specific goals for your child. The 2nd grade expectations are higher than 1st grade. We are now taking the MAP assessment (standardized test) and beginning to focus on reading comprehension. Reading fluency is important, but once the students are reading fluently, we work on comprehension. On Wednesday, I'll send home your conference date and time. Please look for it in your child's folder. If the time does not work, please let me know right away so we can reschedule. I still have a few openings, but am mostly booked. Please come to the conference on time. We only have 20 minutes. I want to respect other families and teachers by staying on schedule. If we need more time, I'm happy to set up another meeting. 2nd graders should come to the conference. They are responsible for their learning and add great insight into the conversation.
I'm looking forward to meeting with each of you! Conference Dates & Times: Monday, November 4th--8:00-9:00 a.m. & 4:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 6th--8:00-9:00 a.m. & 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 12th--8:00-9:00 a.m. & 4:30-7:30 p.m. We have begun WIN Time! WIN stands for What I Need. All the 2nd grade teachers looked at our assessment data to determine what the scholars need to work on for the next three weeks. There is one math intervention group for scholars who still need to develop number sense (based on our unit one math test--all about equations, totals, partners). The rest of the groups have a reading focus. Some of the scholars show a need to work on reading fluency. We have three groups working on fluency. Another three groups are working on reading comprehension. The focus is on retelling a story. The final three groups are also working on reading comprehension, but using Jr. Great Books. These groups are focusing on higher level thinking skills and are providing enrichment for our scholars who are already meeting standards. After the three weeks are finished, we will look at more data and adjust the groups as needed. Some scholars may continue in the same group and others may switch groups. We will be changing the instruction in groups, too. Ask your child about their WIN Time group. They may have a different teacher or leave our classroom. We are excited to begin! It appears fall has finally come to Minnesota! Please be sure to check the weather each day and send your student to school with appropriate clothes. The temperature in the building does change, so having a sweatshirt to put on is a great idea. Students will be going outside for recess unless it is raining or below zero. Make sure your child has the right outdoor clothes every day. If you need any type of assistance with clothing, please let me know. There are resources that help provide hats, mittens, coats, and other cold weather clothing. Our class created their own classroom rules. First, we brainstormed a list of rules. Then, we grouped similar rules together. Next, we worked on phrasing each rule. Finally, we agreed upon the rules. To show that we support the rules and will follow then, we signed the rules on Constitution Day. Ask your child about the rules. They should be able to tell you the rules, as well as what the rules should look like, sound like, and feel like when scholars are following them. The shirts are in. The rubber bands are in place. Today is Tie-Dye Day! We will color our shirts green. Whenever we have a field trip or special class day, we will all wear our green tie-dye shirts to show unity! Be sure to take the shirt out of your child's backpack tonight. There are some special instructions stapled onto the bag that will help set the color and finish your child's shirt. Thanks for participating! The scholars will love to wearing their shirts! In Art, we have learned about warm and cool colors. The students identified the colors in different pieces of artwork. After discussing and naming warm and cool colors, the scholars created their own warm and cool color artwork with chalk. It was messy, but fun creating these beautiful masterpieces! |
Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
