We have been learning about pennies, nickels, and dimes! The children are learning how to identify the different coins and know their value. We are practicing counting money, as well. This is easy to practice at home. If you have some change, have your child name the coins and practice counting the total amount. Start with pennies, then add in the nickels, and finally the dimes. Some students are ready to add in the quarter. When counting money, start with the highest value coins. Have fun with coins!

We are at our last two weeks of school! The students have been working hard. We are taking our final assessments to show what we have learned this past trimester. Be sure that your child is still eating a good breakfast and getting plenty of sleep. We will be working and learning every day. We will also make time for some special activities. Let's make this the best two weeks of kindergarten!
May 30-June 3, 2016Monday: No School--Memorial Day
Tuesday: Dress Up/Fancy Day & Phy Ed Wednesday: Rainbow Day--Wear Yellow & Music Thursday: College/Career Day & Phy Ed Friday: Twins Day, Step-Up Challenge Twins visit, & Eagle Celebration We began our final reading unit this week! We are learning how to draw conclusions using clues in a text and prior knowledge. We do this by making inferences. As we read a story, we think about what we already know. We add that to the clues the author give us within the text. Then, we are able to draw conclusions about what the author is not telling us!
We are learning about time and measurement in math!
The students are learning how to tell and write time to the hour. We are practicing throughout our day by looking at our analog clock, writing the digital time, and identifying the hour and minute hands. You can do the same at home with your child. We are also measuring items with non-standard units of measurement. This week, we are measuring our Woody the Eagle stuffed animal. We have used chain links, discs, and teddy bear counters so far. We are learning how to be precise in our measurements and are making estimates before we measure. What can you measure at home? I received the following information in an email:Great news!
Woodland has been awarded 4 Minnesota Reading Corps tutors for next year! We are actively recruiting now for 2 Elementary Literacy Tutors who will serve at our school for 11 months, beginning in August. Tutors provide research-based interventions to Kindergarten – 3rd grade students one-on-one, who are just below proficiency in reading (Tier II children). They tutor each student daily for 15-20 minutes to build phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency skills. Please help spread the word about these open positions. If you know someone who might be interested—a graduating college student, a friend in career transition, a grandparent or stay-at-home parent—please direct them to www.MinnesotaReadingCorps.org to learn more and apply. As our year is ending, we are doing many different assessments with the children. One that is coming up soon is letter writing. We have learned how to write all 26 upper and lower case letters. The students are expected to use the top, bottom, and middle lines to form the letters correctly. I will be sending home the students' latest practice sheet this week. Attached to it is an example sheet. Please take some time to work with your child on those letters that still need improvement. Thanks for all your help at home!
Our reading unit is on identifying Cause and Effect. As we read a book, we make connections to the text. Those connections help us identify the cause event. Then, we look for the effect. What happened because of the cause?
This is a skill we use in other areas of our life. The students are having fun identifying cause and effect within their daily activities. This is a fun way to check reading comprehension! |
Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
