We are learning about the text features found in non-fiction books. The students have been looking for these features in our reading, social studies, and health books. When you are reading at home, point out the different text features. If you are cooking or grocery shopping, point out the labels on food items and show how it gives you information. Go on a text feature hunt around your house. See what else you can find that gives information!

Conferences are here! It has been wonderful meeting with the parents! The children are leading our conferences and doing a spectacular job telling about their learning! I want to thank the students for their hard work and you the parents for all the work you do with your child. By working together, we can accomplish all our hopes and dreams for the year!
Our final party of the year is approaching! If you are able to help, please let me know. The party is on Thursday, February 14 at 3:00.
The class is learning about sentence writing. We are practicing writing strong sentences. The students are adding adjectives (describing words) before nouns. We are also giving more details (the where, when, & why). Students should be writing strong sentences in all their writing. We are focusing on opinion writing right now, but want to transfer this into all our learning. A good way to practice is to write one strong sentence every day. It may be about the book you are reading, or about your math homework. It could be about a fun family activity or anything else. Happy Writing! We are learning about time in math. Unit 6 is a mini-unit, so we will be testing the week of the 21st. Students have a good understanding of the basics of time! We are learning how to draw the hour hand to reflect how many minutes are past the hour. Another challenge is telling how many minutes before and past an hour (15 minutes before 5:00 or 45 minutes after 4:00 for 4:45). We reviewed A.M. and P.M., naming activites you would do during a certain time of the day, and telling time to the hour, half-hour, and five-minute. We still are working on telling time the the one-minute and elasped time (how many hours and minutes between two differnt clocks). Next week we look at calendar skills. You can practice with your child at home. They love it when I stop all of a sudden and ask, "What time is it? Let's find out!" The wind is blowing, the snow is falling, yes, winter is here! Please make sure your child comes to school with gloves/mittens, hats, snow pants, and boots. They will be going outside for recess unless it is below 0. If you need any winter wear for your child, please let me know and we will find some. Please label your student's clothes. We have at least 12 pairs of black snow pants in our class alone. It is easy to mix them up!
We are encouraging students to wash their hands frequently due to the amount of sickness going around. I am also helping the students be aware of how often they touch their faces (fingers in mouths, nose, etc.) and having them wash their hands when they sneeze or cough. We are also disinfecting our desks and other frequently used common areas. Our supply or disinfecting wipes is going down at a rapid pace. If you are willing and able, we would appreciate any donations! The students are learning how to write opinions. We are learning how to identify a topic and state an opinion. Then, we give reasons to support an opinion. Next, we use linking words to connect the reasons to the opinion. Finally, we write a conclusion. Each day this week, we will focus on one aspect. The students will have time to practice writing their opinions on a variety of topics. After a few weeks of practice, we will have our summative assessment. Feel free to discuss opinions and practice writing them at home!
Second Grade is focusing on sentence writing this month! We will be learning all about sentence structure, including subjects and predicates. Each student will have their own book of sentences. We have subject and predicate games and activities. You can practice at home with your child by writing sentences, highlighting the sentence parts with different colors, finding sentence parts in books, or any other creative ways you think of. Be sure to ask your child about our games and activities. Happy sentence writing!

Ms. BedfordI have been teaching for 22 years. When not at school, I enjoy traveling, knitting, and getting together with family and friends. My cat Gilmore brings me laughter with her silly antics. It is a joy to watch children learn and grow during the school year! Archives
