The students are learning songs to help them identify the different story elements. They are characters, setting, problem, and solution. We are discussing how we analyze and think about these different elements.
As we are reading, we explain our thinking in order to synthesize the information in the book. Our thinking changes as we find out new information. We identify these changes. At the end of the story, we put the story in our own words to practice summarizing.
These are things you can practice at home, too. Have your child explain how their thinking changes as the story progresses. Children should practice identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution. At the end of the book, practice summarizing the story.
