The students have been hearing stories. As I read, I share my thoughts aloud. My focus is on asking questions to help me identify the main idea and details within the story. The students practice asking questions aloud with me. Then we practice identifying the details we hear in the book. We put all the details together to identify what the book is mostly about. This is the main idea.
We are also looking at posters and books during our whole group reading lesson. We spend 10-15 minutes looking at pictures and text. We ask questions, notice details, and state the main idea.
Below are the pictures of our "I Can" statements and anchor chart. We also will use graphic organizers to help show what we know.
I encourage you to ask questions and identify the main idea and details as you read with your child at home!
